Jails and prisons are not mental health facilities

Twenty-six congressional Democrats and 21 Republicans are co-sponsoring a federal bill that would help end the abuse of mentally ill people in our nation's prisons: Comprehensive Justice and Mental Health Act (CJMHA).  To pass this legislation into law, we are going to need your help.

Half of all people killed by police suffer from mental illness and about 25% of our jails and prisons are filled with non-violent offenders who suffer from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression. Jails and prisons hold ten times as many individuals with mental illness as hospitals. These dungeons are often the largest providers of mental health services.

It just doesn't make sense.
