What happens if the PATRIOT Act expires?

With the Senate’s failure to secure a deal to reform or extend the PATRIOT Act before leaving for the Memorial Day recess, the possibility has become more real that parts of key surveillance provisions could simply die.

The Senate, which is struggling to overcome deep reservations from fierce privacy advocates such as Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky), will make an 11th-hour push when it reconvenes at 4 p.m. on May 31, just eight hours before the PATRIOT Act provision is due to lapse.
