BREAKING: Senate blocks USA Freedom Act

The Senate voted early Saturday morning to block the USA Freedom Act, a bill that would have reined in the government's controversial bulk phone record surveillance program while reauthorizing key surveillance authorities under the PATRIOT Act that are set to expire on May 31.

The Senate voted 57-42 to reject the measure, missing the 60-vote threshold needed to move forward on the bill, which the House passed 338-88 earlier this month.

The Senate is set to vote next on a bill to reauthorize the PATRIOT Act for two months. That bill would face widespread opposition in the House, which recessed for Memorial Day earlier this week and isn't set to come back until June 1.
