BREAKING: Senate approved fast-track congressional approval of trade agreements

The Senate has voted to approve a fast-track congressional approval of trade agreements, a major victory for President Barack Obama.

The vote sets the stage for a fierce fight in the House, where the legislation faces opposition from members of Obama's own party.

The bill allows the White House to send trade agreements to Congress for straight up-or-down votes without any amendments, a procedure critics say is undemocratic but proponents say is needed to ensure other countries put their best offers on the table.

Obama needs the bill to complete a huge Asia-Pacific trade agreement.
