BREAKING: Trade promotion authority bill agreement reached

Senior lawmakers have reached a deal on a trade promotion authority bill, moving the White House a step closer to clinching one of the biggest free trade deals in history. The so-called fast track bill would make it easier for the president to negotiate trade agreements, limiting Congress to only yes or no votes on each deal.

The Senate Finance Committee could mark up the legislation as early as next week. The measure is seen as key to enabling President Barack Obama to complete a major trade deal in the Asia-Pacific, though it has pitted him against many in the Democratic party, while Republicans are lining up support for the legislation.
