There is no question that the acts James Eagan Holmes is accused of committing were monstrous. But do they make him a monster? Do they mean he deserves to die? Those answers will soon be in the hands of a jury. But in the meantime, his mother is speaking out -- and with a plea for compassion.
Holmes is currently is prison, awaiting opening statements in a trial that is set to begin on April 27. He faces the death penalty for the July 20, 2012 mass shooting in an Aurora, Colorado movie theater that left twelve people dead and seventy injured. His defense has entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.
