Special Rapporteur on Torture's thematic report on juveniles deprived of liberty‏

An advance copy (English only) of the Special Rapporteur on Torture’s March 2015 thematic report on Children Deprived of Liberty is now available online:  http://antitorture.org/children-deprived-of-liberty/.

For U.S. advocates there is an unusual specific mention of U.S. practice:

Significantly, the United States of America is the only State in the world that still sentences children to life imprisonment without the opportunity for parole for the crime of homicide.” (Pg. 8.)

The Special Rapporteur will present this report, along with his country reports and communications report, to the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday March 9 and Tuesday March 10.  For information about live webcasting of these presentations and about side events, visit http://antitorture.org/28th-session-of-the-human-rights-council/.

The Center’s Anti-Torture Initiative (ATI) launched a #StopChildTorture social media campaign earlier this week with a video of the Special Rapporteur discussing the report.
