PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) - Leaders of California's Indian tribes are want President-elect Barack Obama to appoint more American Indians to the federal judiciary.
There are nearly 900 federal judges throughout the country but government records show only senior District Judge Frank Howell Seay in Oklahoma claims American Indian ancestry.
California tribal leaders met last month with the president-elect's transition team and urged that more Indians be appointed to the federal courts.
The tribes also called for quick action in making appointments at the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.
